New Delhi: Amid growing tension within the Congress party, senior leader Shashi Tharoor has firmly defended his stance on backing the government’s response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

Speaking at an event in Kochi, Tharoor said his loyalty lies first with the nation, not the party, further straining his relationship with the Congress leadership.

'India First' Stance Sparks Unease Within Congress

Responding to a student’s question, Tharoor stressed that while political parties may have differing ideologies, their common goal must be a stronger and safer India. “Which is your first loyalty? To my mind, the nation comes first,” he said, adding that parties are merely tools to achieve a better future for the country.

He acknowledged criticism from within Congress over his public remarks praising the armed forces and the government’s handling of Operation Sindoor, India's counterstrike following the Pahalgam attack. “A lot of people have been very critical of me… But I will stand my ground because I believe this is the right thing for the country,” he added.

Tharoor also quoted Jawaharlal Nehru, “Who lives if India dies?”, a subtle reminder, perhaps, of the Congress’ ideological roots.

Congress Leaders React

Tharoor, later posted on X, “Don’t ask permission to fly. The wings are yours. And the sky belongs to no one.”
