West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has expressed her disappointment over convict Sanjoy Roy being sentenced to life imprisonment till death by the Sealdah court.
Shortly after the verdict was pronounced, Mamata said that she was not satisfied with the verdict. "All of us demanded death sentence but the court gave life imprisonment," she said.
She said if the Kolkata Police had pursued the case, the outcome would have been different. "The case was forcibly taken from Kolkata Police. Had it been with them, it would have ensured death sentence," she said, as reported by PTI.
Earlier today, Mamata had demanded capital punishment for the convict in the case, Sanjoy Roy.
On the other hand, the BJP has criticised the sentence of life imprisonment for the convict as a "travesty of justice," and said justice must not only be done but also be seen to be done.
BJP's IT department head Amit Malviya, in a post on X, said, "Life imprisonment and a 50,000-rupee fine for Sanjoy Roy, accused in the RG Kar rape and murder case, is a travesty of justice. The verdict must be appealed."
He accused the West Bengal Chief Minister of shielding the criminal and said, "Agencies also need to investigate the role of the then Kolkata Commissioner and the Chief Minister in the destruction of evidence. Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done."
