Hyderabad: A major road collapse on Road No 1/12 in the Banjara Hills on Tuesday, August 5, left a massive 10,000-litre water tanker stuck in a crater, causing a severe traffic congestion in the area, resulting in inconvenience for commuters. The incident took place near Maheshwari Chambers and left the tanker’s driver and cleaner seriously injured, as per a report by Telangana Today.

Locals who witnessed the collapse quickly alerted the police. Officials from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and traffic police rushed to the spot, pulling the injured duo from the mangled vehicle and shifting them to a nearby hospital for treatment. The damaged road section has since been cordoned off.

A video of the incident even surfaced on social media. Have a look:

Heavy Rain and Suspected Drain Damage Behind Collapse

Initial assessments by GHMC officials indicate that the road may have caved in due to recent heavy rainfall weakening the surface structure. Authorities found an underground drainage line at the collapse site, and suspect that a possible pipeline failure could have triggered the cave-in.

Meanwhile, Deccan Chronicle reported that no additional injuries were confirmed at the time of the fall. The crater disrupted not just road traffic, but also sparked concerns about ageing infrastructure in one of Hyderabad’s busiest upscale localities.

Traffic in Banjara Hills and Nearby Areas

The incident led to a significant traffic snarl on Road No 1/12 and adjoining routes in Banjara Hills. Police personnel were deployed to manage the situation, while teams worked to extract the stuck water tanker from the crater. Repair and rescue operations were ongoing at the time of filing this report.

The police is still investigating into what caused the road to collapse.
