With an aim to restrict population, the Uttar Pradesh government has come out with a draft policy. The Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath released the draft of the new population policy for the next ten years on Sunday.

While releasing the draft of population policy, Adityanath said that it would be implemented keeping in mind all sections of the society. The new policy aims at bringing down the fertility rate in the state to 2.1 by the year 2026 and to 1.9 by the end of year 2030. The policy will be implemented for a period of year 2021 to 2030. However, there would be no strict law in the state to restrict the population right now. If needed the state government may think of making a law in this regard, said the CM.

The policy says that steps would be taken to promote birth control and use of contraceptives. The policy also says that efforts should be made to create a balance of population among various communities. Awareness programmes would be launched in the communities where fertility rate is high.

As per the policy, the adoption system should be made easy and proper medical facility be provided to treat infertility among men and women. In the policy it has been admitted that the fertility rate in UP is going down and there could be more number of aged people in the days to come. At present there are 1.5 crore elderly people in UP. The policy says that taking care and providing medical assistance to the large number of elderly population would be a big challenge in the near future. It has suggested that in all the 75 districts of state elaborate arrangement for the treatment of aged people be made. More and more tele medicine services for elderly population should be launched.

The leaders of ruling party including legislators have welcomed the new population policy but few of the opposition leaders have termed it another publicity stunt before assembly polls. The leader of Suheldeo Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP) and former minister Omprakash Rajbhar has said that the state government has failed to provide jobs to youth and now it is talking of population control law. He said, "The Yogi government should first provide uniform and free education to the deprived class then only the population control law could be implemented properly".
