New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday indirectly sought a clear and full majority to the Bhartiya Janata Party in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, pointing out that a government with such a majority is recognised the world over.
Joining leaders of other parties in the Lok Sabha in a 30-minute farewell to the House, he said he never had the misgiving that the increased recognition to India by all world bodies in one voice that promises a bright future of the country is not because of him or because of foreign minister Sushma Swaraj, but because of the “reality of a full majority government” after 30 years. Modi said the world leaders know that he has the people’s clear mandate and credit for this goes to the people of the country.
He expressed happiness that India is now the sixth nation in the world in terms of racing fast to become a 5 billion dollar economy. He also pointed out a new aspect of India’s foreign policy during his tenure to remove the country’s image as anti-human right.
He said this has been possible as a matter of pride that India played a very big role in humanity to come to the aid of various countries coming under distress like Nepal, Maldives, Fiji, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The PM also gave full credit to both the Houses of Parliament for enactment of stern laws against black money and corruption, against absconding economic offenders, and against the Benami properties.
He also referred to some new records set by the outgoing 16th Lok Sabha with the highest 44 women MPs elected in 2014 and congratulated them for their high-level of participation in the House. He said it is also for the first time that the Union Ministry had maximum woman ministers and two women – Sushma Swaraj and Nirmala Sitharaman – as members of the committee on security.
The Lok Sabha session came to end after over two hours of the farewell speeches by leaders of various political parties and the valedictory address by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, rounding up achievements of the House in the past five years and thanking all for cooperation in conduct of the House.
