Didi unhurt after fire breaks out in her hotel

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had a close shave when a fire broke out in her hotel room in Malda district on Thursday evening. She was evacuated in time and is safe, party leaders said. “She was in the room when the fire broke…She is safe,” tweeted Trinamool national spokesperson Derek O’Brien. Banerjee, who was in Malda for the election campaign, had stayed at a private hotel called Golden Park in Narayanpur. “The AC in her room got overheated and smoke started to come out. Luckily it was detected early and she was evacuated. “She is safe now. Her room has been changed,” said state Tourism Minister Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury.

India releases 21 Pakistan prisoners

New Delhi: India released 21 Pakistani prisoners who were languishing in jails across the country due to delays in the identification processes. The newly released Pakistani prisoners who were leaving for their home country claimed that did not deserve to be jailed and said that they felt good that they were going back home. Earlier in February, the Border Security Force (BSF) handed over 20 Pakistani prisoners to the Pakistani Rangers at Wagah outpost in Punjab. Media reports said the prisoners were logded in various Indian jails and were released after the completion of the sentences as per the Indian law. Most of them were arrested in India on charges of inadvertent crossing. Out of 20 Pakistani prisoners, some of them were fishermen who had been jailed in Gujarat.

Modi rival discloses 9 pending criminal cases

VARANASI: Congress’ Ajay Rai, who is fighting Lok Sabha polls against BJP’s Narendra Modi here, today disclosed nine pending criminal cases against him in different courts, including two under the Gangster Act. These are the cases where 42-year Rai has been made an accused and the courts have taken cognisance of the matter. However, there are no cases where Rai has been convicted by a court, according to the election affidavit filed by the Congress leader for Lok Sabha elections.            In the affidavit, Rai has also declared total assets worth about Rs 42 lakh in his name and about Rs 30 lakh in his wife’s name, taking the total to about Rs 72.25 lakh.

More than one crore donation for AAP

NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party has received donations of more than Rs.1 crore in the last two days in response to an appeal by its leader Arvind Kejriwal. “For the past two days donations have swelled and we have received over Rs 80 lakh on Wednesdat and Rs 35 lakh yesterday. This easily crosses the one crore figure,” said a party leader. The donations have come from within India and across the globe. Donation have come from party supporters from Singapore, USA, Belgium, Oman, Canada, Japan, Germany and Australia. A donor from Tamil Nadu today donated Rs 1 lakh while the minimum amount that was donated was Rs 10. Two days back Kejriwal, who is contesting against BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi from Varanasi, had appealed for donations for his campaign. “Reached Varanasi.
