Rain lashed several parts of Delhi on Monday, triggering waterlogging and traffic congestion, while adverse weather conditions led to the diversion of 15 flights, including three international services, at the Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Flights diverted amid heavy rain
According to reports, 12 flights were diverted to Jaipur, two to Chandigarh and one to Lucknow as heavy rainfall and thunderstorms affected flight operations at the airport.
The Delhi Airport issued an advisory at noon, saying the national capital was experiencing “inclement weather conditions” in line with the India Meteorological Department’s forecast. However, it said flight operations at the airport were normal at the time of the advisory and urged passengers to check with their respective airlines for the latest information.
Weather office issues alerts
The weather office had issued a red alert for heavy rain and a yellow alert for moderate rainfall across several districts. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph were also forecast in parts of the city.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms were reported at isolated locations across South East Delhi, East Delhi, Shahdara, Central Delhi, North East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi, South West Delhi, West Delhi, North West Delhi and North Delhi.
Waterlogging hits city traffic
Several commuters took to social media to report traffic snarls and waterlogging in different parts of the capital.
Minimum temperature above normal
Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 27.8 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung on Monday, 1.4 degrees above normal. The Ridge recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the city at 24 degrees Celsius.
