New Delhi: Hundreds of Congress workers on Tuesday held a day-long fast at the AICC headquarters here on Tuesday to press Rahul Gandhi to withdraw his resignation as the party president.

Tension mounted when one party worker tried to hang himself from a tree, but those on fast pulled him down, though he continued to say that he will hang himself if Rahul does not withdraw the resignation.

The party workers say responsibility of the poll debacle is collectively on all and hence no logic in Rahul’s resignation.

In every meeting with the Congress leaders that Rahul has held in the past one week, he finds everyone asking him to rescind his resignation and start resurrecting the party with his choice of new leaders.

Last week, he tried to persuade the leaders from the poll-going states, including Maharashtra and Haryana, to start the preparations, but none showed interest as he was told nothing will be done unless and until he withdraws his resignation.

The same scenario was repeated at his residence here on Monday when he called a meeting of the chief ministers of five Congress-ruled states to assess performance of the governments.
