Raipur/ Dantewada: The Sub Health Centre Potali in Naxal-affected Kuakonda block, Dantewada district, has officially reopened after a 20-years amid the fears of attack and security concerns. The World Health Organization (WHO) appreciated the work and has recognized the initiative as a significant milestone. It applauded the efforts and wished that it would help in the restoration of the healthcare system in the region.

The initiative has been supported by the Government of India’s Aspirational Block Program, under the Chhattisgarh government’s Niyaad Nellnar Scheme, and technical assistance from WHO India, the center has been upgraded to an Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centre. It now serves over 2,500 residents from three nearby villages, offering a six-bed ward, consultations with qualified medical staff, and support from 26 ASHA workers.

Built in 2003, the center remained non-operational due to Naxal threats, forcing villagers to rely on a temporary health facility 10 km away—a particularly difficult situation for women. Despite challenges, including a 2023 IED blast that killed 10 security personnel and the murder of local leader Joga Ram, the project was completed.

On January 1, 2025, the center finally became operational. Sarpanch Lalita Mandvi expressed relief, saying, “We waited years for this. Now, women won’t have to travel far for treatment.” Community Health Officer Ritu Kunjam added, “Healthcare is now accessible, and quality treatment is possible.”

The reopening of Sub Health Centre Potali highlights the power of collaboration between governments, local communities, and international organizations, setting an example for delivering essential services in challenging environments.
