Chennai: The city woke up at 05: 43 AM and the sun is likely to set at 6: 27 PM on Thursday, May 15, 2025. Today, the minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to be around 29 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius, respectively. Rainfall is predicted in Tamil Nadu

The Regional Meteorological Department predicted scattered rainfall in isolated regions of Tamil Nadu on Thursday. The temperatures are also likely to fall by 2-3 degrees Celsius. The rainfall is likely due to a cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman Sea. Heavy rainfall lashed numerous parts of Tamil Nadu, which relieved the residents of scorching heat and humidity on May 14.

Why is Tamil Nadu experiencing rainfall?

Tamil Nadu is experiencing rainfall due to the Northeast Monsoon, which is characterised by winds blowing from the northeast towards the southern Indian peninsula. These winds pick up moisture from the Bay of Bengal as they move inland, and they bring rain to the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu. The eastern coast of India, including Tamil Nadu, is positioned to receive rainfall from the Northeast Monsoon as the winds blow from the sea to the land.

Today's AQI

Today, the air quality is expected to be around 93, which indicates moderate AQI in the city and its surrounding areas. Some people who are less sensitive to air pollution may also have problems. Sensitive people may face more problems. The higher the AQI, the higher the level of air pollution and the greater the health concern. An AQI of 50 or less indicates good air quality, while an AQI of more than 300 indicates hazardous air quality.

When is the monsoon expected in Chennai?

The monsoon is expected to arrive in Chennai between June 1 and June 5, 2025. This means that Chennai can expect the first rains of the Southwest monsoon around that time.
