Chennai: The capital city is known as the Gateway to South India, and usually experiences hot and humid weather conditions during the summer and early monsoon months. The Chennai Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a mix of rain and scorching heat across Tamil Nadu over the next few days. The city's weather is expected to remain warm and humid, with occasional chances of light rainfall due to the ongoing Southwest Monsoon influence.

On Sunday, the capital city woke up at 05: 48 AM and the sun is likely to set at 6: 40 PM. Today, the minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to be around 29 degrees Celsius and 36 degrees Celsius, respectively. The humidity is expected to be around 57 per cent.

Today's weather

The Regional Meteorological Department (RMC) has predicted rainfall to continue over Tamil Nadu. Other parts of the state will experience light rainfall, which is likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms. The temperatures are expected to remain above normal, causing discomfort in several regions.

The city may experience gusty winds of speed reaching 20-30 kmph. Rainfall is likely to occur in districts, including Western Ghats, Puducherry, Karaikal, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruvenelveli, Theni, and Thenkashi until the weekend. The skies are expected to be cloudy and it will remain the same throughout the day. The rainfall is likely to continue till July 8, 2025.

Cyclonic circulation is influencing the rainfall

The rainfall is likely due to a cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman Sea. The weather department also stated that, apart from Tamil Nadu, rainfall is likely to occur in other states, including Odisha, Karnataka, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Telangana.

Weather tips

If you're planning to go outdoors, it's advisable to stay hydrated and wear light, breathable clothing. Keeping an umbrella handy could help in case of sudden rain spells. It's also a good idea to avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours when the heat and humidity are at their highest.
