Chennai Rainfall: IMD Issues Red Alert In State As Cyclone Fengal To Hit Mainland; Schools To Remain Shut

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, as heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur on Wednesday. The Fengal Cyclone activated in the region will likely continue to move north-northwestwards in the Bay of Bengal.

Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert in Tamil Nadu as heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely on Wednesday. The Fengal Cyclone, which has activated in the region, will likely continue to move north-northwestwards and intensify on November 27, 2024. Due to this, the state government has declared holidays in schools and colleges in numerous regions, including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Tiruchi, Ariyalur and Pudukkottai.

Widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in isolated places, including Kancheepuram, Thanjavur, Chengalpattu and Pudukkottai districts of Tamil Nadu. Today, Chennai and Puducherry is also forecasted to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. The wind is expected to blow steadily at a speed of 50-60 Kmph. The minimum and maximum temperatures in Chennai is expected to range between 26 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius, respectively.

IMD Issues a red alert in the state

The IMD has issued a flash flood warning in Puducherry and Karaikal. The flood warning has also been issued in Madurai, Salem, Teni, Perambalur, Kanchipuram, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Virudhunagar districts.

ANI (News Agency) shared a video of Dr S Balachandranon X and wrote, "Tamil Nadu | Director of Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, Dr S Balachandran says, "As of now, yesterday's depression intensifies today morning into a deep depression... It is likely to further intensify into a cyclonic storm and move towards the north direction, towards the Tamil Nadu coast..."

Weather update for upcoming days

According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in isolated regions of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Villuppuram and Kancheepuram on November 28 and 29. Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is likely in a few regions of Tamil Nadu, Karaikal, and Puducherry.
