New Delhi: Team India's star pace bowler Mohammed Shami was targeted by a Muslim cleric for "not keeping Roza" during the holy month of Ramadan. Maulana Shahabuddin Barelvi, the President of All India Muslim Jamaat, said that Shami had committed a sin by not keeping roza.

"Islam has declared fasting (Roza) as obligatory, and it is mandatory for all sane and mature men and women. If someone deliberately does not fast, it is considered a grave sin. Similarly, Mohammed Shami did not observe Roza, even though it was his religious duty," the Muslim cleric said.

"By not keeping 'Roza', he has committed a crime. He should not do this. In the eyes of Shariat, he is a criminal. He stands guilty in religious terms and should not have done this. I advise and remind him to strictly follow the obligations of Islam," he added.

Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi's Remarks:

During the India-Australia's Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final match, a clip of Shami drinking juice went viral. Netizens are praising him for keeping the country above religion.

The Islamic holy month of Ramzan started in India from March 2 as the crescent moon was sighted on Saturday. Ramzan is also a month of charity or zakat, the third pillar of Islam.
