New Delhi/Kolkata: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Anurag Thakur on Wednesday questioned when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as an opposition leader in 2005 claimed of ‘fake voters’ in Bengal then why is she stopping it now?
“In 2005, in the Lok Sabha, Mamata Banerjee went near the Speaker’s chair, tore papers, and threw them, saying that a vote bank of Bangladeshi infiltrators was being created and their names were on the voter list. At that time, you talked about stopping this, but today, when there is talk of carrying out a cleaning campaign, why are you getting the cleaning of the fake infiltrators’ vote bank stopped? Were you pretending back then? And today, to save the infiltrators’ vote bank, are you shedding crocodile tears?” questioned the BJP MP.
Taking potshots at Trinamool Congress (TMC) national secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee, Thakur mentioned that there are ‘suspicious voters’ in the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency.
“In Diamond Harbour it is not a small figure; there are a total of 2,59,779 suspicious votes. Who are the duplicate voters? One Khurshid Alam, same name, but the father’s name keeps changing again and again,” alleged Thakur.

Speaking about addition of mass voters, the BJP MP said, “In Diamond Harbour, out of 1,724 booths, 301 booths have seen a 15 per cent increase in the last four years, and all these booths have been won by the TMC. This is clearly a bulk addition. In Diamond Harbour, there are 17, in Bishnupur 35, in Maheshtala 92, in Baghaj 89, and in 32 booths where this increase has occurred. Where is Abhishek Banerjee? He should see that in Diamond Harbour, the government is his, the BLOs are his, the BLAs are his—so is this why he is winning elections? Is this not a game of fake voting?”
TMC leader Kunal Ghosh however slammed back the saffron camp stating that the BJP cannot ‘digest’ the fact that Banerjee had won with over seven lakh votes.
