Patna: Two elected village representatives allegedly attempted to rape an young woman in Bihari Tola village of Vaishali district on Wednesday evening.
When the woman and her mother protested and resisted the rape attempt, they called the village barber, got their heads tonsured and paraded them on the village streets.
Police have arrested a ward councillor and the barber, according to the Additional DG of police (headquarters), Ranjit Kumar. Seven persons have been named in the FIR.
According to the FIR lodged with the Bhagwanpur police station in Vaishali district, this morning the ward councillor, Khurshid Ahmad, the sarpanch, Mansoor, along with five others entered the house of Mohammad Abbas and tried to molest his daughter.
When her mother Shwerul Nisha protested, both were assaulted and the village barber was called to tonsure their heads. Later, they were paraded on the streets.
The ADG said, "An attempt was made to rape the woman. When it was resisted, the village leaders led by ward councillor and sarpanch beat them up and tonsured their heads. They instigated other villagers to torture the mother -daughter duo.”
Sanjay Kumar, station house officer of Bhagwanpur police station, who visited the village today said two accused have been arrested and efforts were on to arrest five others named in the FIR. The Sarpanch is also absconding, he said.
Both the accused and the victims are from the same community. Father of the woman is a beggar, according to the police.
Dilmani Mishra, chair person of the Bihar State Women Commission said she has taken cognizance of the crime and directed Vaishali SP to ensure arrest of all the accused immediately.
