New Delhi: Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP's) national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday suffered a shocking defeat from the New Delhi assembly seat. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Parvesh Verma secured the seat
Meanwhile, Congress's Sandeep Dikshit came at a distant third spot. Notably, the alleged liquor excise policy scam dented the ruling AAP's chance of winning the polls in a big way.
Other AAP Bigwigs, including Manish Sisodia, lost their respective seats. However, Delhi CM Atishi managed to bag the Kalkji seat.
The Kejriwal-led party suffered a loss of 39 seats in the Delhi polls in 2025. From 62, the AAP's tally reduced to 23 seats. The saffron party targeted the AAP over several issues, including alleged liquor scam.
What Anna Hazare Said On AAP's Defeat:
Social activist Anna Hazare on Saturday also slammed Kejriwal. he said that the AAP "drowned" due to the liquor policy and its focus on money, failing to understand its duty to serve people selflessly. With the liquor policy issue came the money and they drowned in it. The (AAP's) image was tarnished. People saw he (Arvind Kejriwal) talks about clean character and then about liquor," Hazare, who led the anti-corruption movement in 2011, told reporters.
The Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was founded in 2012 following the anti-corruption movement.
"AAP lost as it failed to understand the need to serve people selflessly and took the wrong path. Money took the front seat which dented AAP's image, leading to its defeat," Hazare said.
The BJP is all set to make a comeback in Delhi after 27 years. As per the latest trends on the Election Commission website, the BJP is leading in 47 seats, while the AAP is ahead in only 23 seats. Meanwhile, the Congress failed to open its account for the third consecutive time in Delhi.
