Assam, first Indian state to observe Child Protection Day

Guwahati: Assam became the first state in the country to observe Child Protection Day today with about 1400 children participating in the central function here.

The day was observed across the state and a central function was organised here under the aegis of Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) in collaboration with the UNICEF.

The highlight of the function was the colourful dances and skits performed by schoolchildren to highlight issues like quality education, importance of protection of children, child trafficking and child marriage.

Noted mime artist and Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Mainul Haque enthralled the audience with his act on child protection issue while prominent singer Anima Choudhury, Sattriya exponent Ghanakanta Borbayan, folk artiste Jina Rajkumari and Bihu troupe led by Dreamly Gogoi also regaled the young audience with their performances.

The colourful programme concluded with a pledge administered by ASCPCR Chairperson Runumi Gogoi to everyone present to always work for the protection of children against all forms of abuse and ensure their rights.

The function was attended among others by Justice Indira Shah of the Gauhati High Court, Assam minister for Social Welfare and Jails Akon Bora and chief of UNICEF AssamDr Tushar Manohar Rane.
