A lavish wedding in London for AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi’s daughter Kaneez Fatima Owaisi has triggered a wave of criticism and trolling on social media, with users questioning the contrast between the celebrations and Owaisi’s past public appeals for simple and low-cost Muslim weddings.
Kaneez Fatima Owaisi, a barrister and daughter of AIMIM Floor Leader and Chandrayangutta MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi, married Dr. Ibrahim Murtaza in London on August 20, 2026. The high-profile wedding was attended by several prominent personalities, including Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who had been invited by Owaisi and was seen arriving at the wedding venue in videos shared online.
The wedding soon became a topic of discussion on social media, particularly among users from Hyderabad’s Old City. Critics accused Owaisi of not following the advice he has reportedly given in his public speeches, where he has urged Muslims to keep weddings simple, conduct Nikah in mosques and avoid excessive expenditure.
One Telangana High Court advocate wrote on X that Muslims in the Old City were “openly trolling” Owaisi over his daughter’s London wedding, referring to his previous messaging about simple Nikah ceremonies and spending less on weddings.
Another social media user alleged that Owaisi had previously advised Muslims against spending more than Rs 1.5 lakh on their daughters’ weddings, while claiming, without providing evidence, that the London wedding could have cost several crores. The claim about the wedding’s expenditure could not be independently verified.
The controversy has therefore largely centred on what critics describe as a perceived contradiction between Owaisi’s public statements on wedding expenditure and the scale and overseas setting of his daughter’s wedding.
Telangana CM Revanth Reddy Attends London Wedding
The presence of Revanth Reddy at the ceremony also drew attention online, given the political prominence of both leaders in Telangana. Videos showing the Chief Minister arriving at the venue were widely circulated on social media. Akbaruddin Owaisi had personally met him and invited for his daughter's wedding.
However, the online criticism is based primarily on social media posts and reactions, and there is no independent confirmation of the alleged cost of the wedding or other claims being circulated online.
