New Delhi: Hours after Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s surprise resignation on July 21, the very first day of the Monsoon Session 2025, social media was abuzz with speculation over who might succeed him. Among the names doing the rounds, one that has particularly caught the internet's attention is Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The chatter began after a tweet by a senior journalist and author hinted at the possibility of Kumar stepping into the constitutional role.

Soon, multiple users joined in, debating whether the JD(U) veteran might be the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) pick for the Vice Presidency. While there has been no official word from the government or the party, the speculation has only grown louder online.

Have a look at some of these reactions here:

Dhankhar's Shock Resignation

Dhankhar, who assumed office as Vice President in 2022, cited health reasons for his resignation, which was announced just hours after he presided over the Rajya Sabha on Monday morning (July 21). Before stepping down, Dhankhar made headlines by reading out a detailed statement regarding a motion for the removal of Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Varma.

The motion, backed by over 50 members of the Rajya Sabha, was submitted under Article 217(1)(b) read with Article 218 of the Constitution and Section 3 of the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968. Explaining the legal nuances, Dhankhar clarified that if two such motions are introduced in separate Houses, only the first one tabled is taken into consideration.

His sudden exit has sparked political curiosity and caught even the ruling alliance by surprise. As of now, Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, Harivansh Narayan Singh, has taken over as the acting Chairperson under Article 91 of the Constitution until the next V-P is elected.

About Nitish Kumar

Nitish Kumar, currently serving his ninth term as Bihar’s Chief Minister, is no stranger to national politics. From Union Minister in the Vajpayee cabinet to being a key player in both the NDA and the opposition-led Mahagathbandhan at different times, Kumar has remained a political shapeshifter with deep administrative experience.

Although his name remains unofficial in the current race, many netizens believe Kumar’s long-standing association with the NDA, and his relatively non-controversial image, could make him a strong contender for the position.
