A tragic stampede in Bengaluru that claimed 11 lives and left over 50 injured has prompted the Karnataka government to introduce new crowd control regulations, according to an NDTV report.
The proposed rules will hold event organisers accountable for accidents, with violators facing up to three years' imprisonment and fines starting from Rs 50,000.
"If the event planner does not apply before conducting the event or fails to control the crowd gathered and fails to give the compensation or violates the provisions of this Act or rules made hereunder in any other way, shall punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three tars or with fine up to five lakhs rupees or both," says the draft bill, accessed by NDTV.
The report further indicates these regulations will include penalties for commercial event organisers hosting gatherings such as sports events or circuses. The government aims to prevent future tragedies through stricter oversight of large public assemblies.
