Lucknow: In a shocking incident, two children with special needs lost their lives at Lucknow’s Lokbandhu Hospital on Tuesday evening (March 25) from alleged food poisoning after consuming contaminated water at the Nirvan Rajkiya Bal Grah Visheshikrit rehabilitation cente at Mohan Road.
As per a report by ETV Bharat, 25 other children have been hospitalised after they consumed the polluted water and suffered vomiting, diarrhea and severe dehydration. The two children have been identified as Renu and Deepa.
Rajiv Dixit, Chief Medical Superintendent of Lok Bandhu Hospital, told The Indian Express, "Since March 21, 25 children have been admitted with us with symptoms of dehydration, vomiting. After tests, some children were diagnosed with anaemia as well as renal disease. Two children, about 16 years of age, died during treatment."
CMO Deploys Team for Supervision
In continuation of the report, health officials confirmed that the cause of death will be determined after a post-mortem is conducted. Lucknow DM disclosed that the rehabilitation center where the children fell sick, is operated on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
He further revealed that the CMO has deployed a team at the spot for supervision; however, preliminary investigation reveals that the children fell ill after consuming the contaminated water.
70 Children Kept Under Observation
Additionally, the CMO instructed all the children associated with the center to get their medical examination done, considering the seriousness of the matter. Authorities also released guidelines for arranging clean drinking water at the center and asked them to clean their water tanks.
As per the report, CMO doctor NB Singh revealed that separate team of the health department has been sent to the Nirvana Sanstha. He added that over 70 children are currently being examined by their team and are kept under observation.
