Mumbai: The remand application submitted by Mumbai Police at Bandra Court on Monday clearly says that the probe agency needs to carry out further investigations in multiple locations in several cities mainly in eastern and north-eastern India in the Sheena Bora murder case, and it clearly indicates more arrests in this case in the coming few days. Interestingly, police also sought intervention of the court when the lawyers of Indrani Mukerjea and Sanjeev Khanna prayed for home-made food for the accused duo. The public prosecutor argued against the prayer saying, “There are possibilities of both of them being poisoned through home-cooked food.”

The court agreed to the counter argument by the public prosecutor and put a blockade on the way of Indrani enjoying ‘ghar ka khana’ in Santracruz police station lock-up. A million-dollar question arises on the identity of the person who wants Indrani to get killed — is someone feeling threatened that Indrani may open a Pandora’s box to the probe agency leading to his or her arrest, too, in this case? Police denied comment on the matter, saying the matter is sub-judice. However, the court allowed accused number three, Khanna, to have home-made food during his stay in the police lock-up.

“There are strong possibilities of at least two to three others being arrested in this case, who were also party to the same conspiracy. Things are being kept under wraps so that the investigation is not affected at this crucial juncture,” said a source close to the probe agency.  Ironically, police on Monday slapped charges of poisoning against Indrani and Khanna under section 383 of Indian Penal Code.

“It is such a maze that people who have been charged with accusations of poisoning him (Mikhail Bora) are also threatened of being poisoned, which forced the police to request the court not to allow outside food for both Mukerjea and Khanna,” said a source from the legal fraternity. Usually, an arrested person during his/her police custody is allowed to have outside food and unless it is an exceptional case, the police do not usually object to such a facility being offered to an arrested person.

The remand application also talks about ‘some offices/establishments to be raided for the interest of the investigation,’ indicating that the Mumbai Police is now getting into the tough task of accumulating more evidence against the two main accused persons as they continue to remain evasive when facing interrogation. The next few days are going to be crucial ones when it comes to the probe, as various teams of city police are expected to raid various places in Kolkata, Guwahati and Shillong.
