New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former IPS officer Kiran Bedi has said that Nirbaya case convict Mukesh Singh’s statement that girls and women will continue to get raped so long as they deviate from their traditional role of remaining at home and doing household chores, reflects the mind of the criminal and exposes the real cause of rape. Giving her reaction to the BBC documentary-cum-interview with Mukesh Singh, Bedi told, “This film has brought reality in light. It reflects the mind of the criminal and exposes a living reality of a parochial and medieval mindset. It exposes a mindset which looks at women as public property. It expose the real cause of rape.”

She further went on to say that, “Basically, it is hitting the social mind of these kinds of people. Who is to differentiate on this. I believe that the parents are part of this exposure voice. For such  a person, a woman is not seen as a person, but as someone’s property.” The former BJP chief ministerial candidate for Delhi said that there was a need to analyze the crime that took place on the night of December 16, 2012, and get to know why it had happened, and how such crimes needed to be tackled. It was also important to pin the blame on those who had failed to prevent it, she added.

Bedi said that the BBC cannot be solely blamed for doing and airing the interview of Mukesh Singh, as a channel of such repute would have got the required permissions from the concerned authorities before going ahead. “Nothing is done without permissions. I am sure permissions were in place. They (the BBC) can’t enter without the permission. The question is who permitted. The permission has to come from the home ministry,” Bedi said.
