Kathmandu: Nepal’s authorities Wednesday said 156 people were killed in the disastrous landslide in a rural part of the country over the weekend.

Rescuers have found 33 bodies from the debris in Sindhupalchok district while 123 were still missing, Xinhua reported.

“It is now almost impossible to find the missing people alive,” chief district officer Gopal Parajuli was quoted as saying.

The authorities have announced $400 to the families of each deceased to conduct funeral rites.

Sindhupalchok is located in Nepal’s eastern hilly region.

Around 5,000 people from 11 districts have been affected due to the landslide while more than 1,000 have been displaced.
