New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday greeted the nation on the auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima.

“Greetings to everyone on the auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima,” he tweeted. Buddha Purnima, which marks the birth, enlightenment and mahaparinirvana of Lord Buddha, is being celebrated all over the world today. The Central Government is hosting the International Buddha Poornima Diwas function in New Delhi to mark the occasion. According to reports, a large number of delegates, eminent scholars, Buddhist monks and nuns from India and various other nations will participate in the daylong event being organized by the International Buddhist Confederation with the support of Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs.

A special prayer to express solidarity with the people of earthquake-hit Nepal will also be organized on this occasion. Prime Minister Modi will lead the nation in prayers and solidarity. The Buddhist tradition regards Lumbini, in present-day Nepal, to be Buddha’s birthplace. He grew up in Kapilavastu.
