Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh today said it was committed to ensure free and fair elections in the state, but could not do anything if “disorder” was created at the level of Election Commission.

“Our government is committed to ensure free and fair polls… Whether it is terrorists or anti-social elements, no one will be allowed to create disturbance in poll process,” SP spokesman and minister Shivpal Yadav told reporters here.

Asked about transfer of several senior officers by the Election Commission, Yadav said, “It was our effort that there should be no “gadbadi” (disorder) during elections…

But the government cannot do anything if “gadbadi” is at the level of EC.”

On the replacing of party’s candidate from the Lucknow Lok Sabha seat, Yadav said it was a strategic decision after BJP fielded its president Rajnath Singh from the constituency.

The SP has replaced its candidate from Lucknow Ashok Bajpai with Abhishek Mishra earlier in the day.
