Gandhinagar : Wading through a quagmire of dissensions over ticket distribution, the BJP in Gujarat walked into a fresh controversy on Monday when a video of their Lok Sabha candidate from Rajkot, Mohan Kundariya, walking on the bended backs of students of a yoga school, went viral on the social media inviting all-round condemnation.
On Sunday, Kundariya, the party nominee for the Lok Sabha elections from Rajkot constituency of Saurashtra region in Gujarat, had gone to attend a function at a yoga institution in his constituency. Kundariya is reported to have walked over a human bridge formed by a chain of bended backs of the students who were on all fours. A video taken on the occasion found its way onto ‘Youtube’ and went viral on Monday inviting the wrath of netizens.
As the news was picked up by afternoon newspapers in Rajkot, Kundariya is reported to have defended himself and issued a statement stating that he had walked at the specific request of the students, however if anyone’s sentiments have been hurt, he is sincerely sorry.”I am not an insensitive person and would never hurt students. Moreover all of them were over 25 years of age,” he was quoted as saying.
Gujarat BJP leader Vijay Rupani sought to defend his party colleague saying that it was an emotional response at the specific request of the students of the yoga school who were very eager to demonstrate their strength, both physical and mental. The matter is only being played up because he is a candidate contesting the elections, Rupani added.
The video not only shows Kundariya walking on the bended backs of the students but also doing so to the strains of Vande Mataram. The video also shows him waving a flag even as the national flag is fluttering in the background.
