Mumbai : Mumbaikars will have to endure the existing water crunch for some more time, as BMC has decided to maintain the 20 per cent water cut in the city. The civic body was supposed to review its water cut policy by October 1 as it expected increased rainfall to improve the situation, but has not done so.

Currently, the city is facing a 20 per cent water cut for all residential and commercial complexes and 50 per cent water cut for all malls and hotels. There is 11, 45, 001 million litres of water in Mumbai’s seven lakes as of Thursday, but the city requires 14, 08,547 million litres of water in its reserves before October 1. Even though the existing water reserves will suffice the city for another 342 days, the BMC wants to carry out water cuts as a precautionary measure.

When the civic body announced its 20 per cent water cut policy earlier last month, it also assured Mumbaikars that it will review the policy on October 1. However, a senior official from the hydraulics department informed that the BMC did not conduct any meeting on Thursday and intends to maintain the current water cut policy.

Two of the largest lakes that provide water to Mumbai, the Bhatsa and the Upper Vaitarna are controlled by the state government’s irrigation department.
