Margao: A day after a group of sex workers, including transgenders, created a ruckus at the Margao police station alleging harassment at the hands of the men-in-uniform, a group of shopkeepers from the city’s old station road extended support to the police to clean the area of prostitution and anti-social activities.

Led by Bushan Karapurkar and Satish Nerulkar, the shopkeepers welcomed the action initiated by the Margao police to clean up the old station road of the illegalities. Both Satish and Bushan said they are forced to shut down their establishments by 7 pm due to the rising anti-social activities on the station road.

“The shopkeepers at the Old station road demand that the Margao police crack a whip against prostitution, illegal and anti-social activities on the road. Decent families avoid taking the old station road because of the anti-social activities,” they claimed, demanding that the police take the ongoing drive to the logical conclusion.

Satish added: “We have come to know through the media that a group of women had protested at the Margao police station last night. We have come to the police station to support the police drive to clean up the station road of all anti-social activities.”

Bushan pointed out that he was attacked by one of the persons for taking up the issue of the safety and security of the people at the old station road.
