Margao: The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) made its presence felt at Sonsodo plant on Thursday to cover the legacy dump with tarpaulin sheets.

Though the GWMC had carried out the annual exercise of covering the Sonsodo legacy dump with tarpaulin, a portion of the dump was left uncovered.

MMC officials pointed out that the personnel deputed by the agency were engaged in the work of covering the yard with tarpaulin sheets.

The exercise of covering the Sonsodo legacy dump had started over a decade ago upon directions of the High Court. While the MMC had been doing the job in the past, the work was subsequently done by the agencies engaged by the civic body to treat the Sonsodo waste.

The Goan had reported that though the Sonsodo dump was being covered with tarpaulin sheets, the measure could not stop the flow of leachate from the legacy dump into the adjoining storm water drains and water bodies.
