Dr Suresh Surana, born in 1962 in Jodhpur, is a first generation entrepreneur and founder of the sixth largest accounting and consulting group in India, RSM Astute Consulting Group, part of the global RSM network. An organization should be built on processes “ After completing my CA in 1984, I was fascinated by the uncertainties and excitement associated with entrepreneurial ventures. My father, who rose from a humble beginning to the senior most leadership in Century Textiles & Industries Ltd during his 45- year tenure, encouraged me to venture on my own.

I started from a 283 sq. ft.

office in New Marine Lines, in 1985. RSM Astute Group’s operations now span the country with over 1000 personnel. We believe that an organization should be built on people, processes and technology.

A rigorous process culture ensures consistency of services.

Apart from expert technical knowledge, solution orientation and playing a strategic partnership role in client’s business is essential. Today, information is readily available at the click of a button and there is no premium for mere information. The only premium is for solutions and alignment with client’s objectives.

Believe in yourself To be a successful leader, you need three things – Vision, Self Belief and Passion… I am greatly inspired by Chanakya. He demonstrated that if you have vision and public welfare at heart, you can create a kingdom without any army or money. He is the greatest example of vision, self- belief, strategy, execution and commitment to nation building.

Size and scale are critical We cannot be globally competitive without size and scale. Secondly, the need to leverage technology for building any meaningful enterprise. The world we are living today is completely different than the world two decades back… Every enterprise needs to redefine itself in this era. This is a great opportunity.

Determine your priorities The most important aspect of time management is for you to determine your priorities and agenda. Several times, your schedule and agenda as well as priorities are determined by others… I believe it is important to allow people enough freedom and empowerment to work within the overall framework and give them a sense of space, comfort and pride of being able to realize their potential.

We need to be world- class I feel in India we have a great opportunity with the growth prospects and cost advantage… We need to build or provide world class products and services which are globally competitive and this is a collective responsibility of each one of us. The commitment to excellence which helped Japan and Germany emerge as world leaders and this is not the responsibility only of the government or administration but each one of us.

Passion is the differentiator The most important thing you need to succeed is “ passion” or junoon . “ Passion” is the fuel which energizes any activity and this is one differentiator any young entrepreneur can have to succeed against the bigwigs.
