Saving Space: 4 Tips for Making the Most out of Your Fridge

How many times have you opened the fridge and stood there believing there’s nothing to eat, despite the fact that food of various sorts was glancing at you from every corner? Or perhaps it annoys you that there’s no room to store the groceries you’ve just bought? By keeping your fridge organized, you will not only make sure to never experience such hurdles again, but also reduce the chances of any food remaining unnoticed and going to waste. Try the following and the results are bound to follow:

  1. Use a labeling system

By putting leftovers into boxes and labeling them, you will find it much easier to get a clear overview of what’s in your fridge and how much time you have to eat the food before it goes bad. Don’t bother with trying to determine the expiration dates if you don’t know them; instead, write the date of cooking the food and placing it in the box. If you feel the need to start over fresh, you can replace your old refrigerator with a new one. That being said, some people feel this is quite a hefty one-time fee, so they prefer renting one instead. While you’re at it, checking out furniture on rent online and picking something suitable is a good way to breathe some new life into your kitchen area.

  1. Rearrange the food

One of the best ways to make more space is to move everything to another place. Bigger items should go into bigger compartments and the smaller ones should be used to fill the empty spaces in between. If your old fridge simply doesn’t have the capacities required no matter how you rearrange its contents, consider getting a new one by browsing through home appliances on rent websites. There’s more than plenty to choose from, so it’s easy to find something for all tastes and preferences.

  1. Get stackable containers

Having containers of various shapes and sizes is good in terms of adaptability, but poor in terms of efficiency. By getting stackable containers instead, you’ll make sure that every little bit of empty space in your fridge is being utilized to full capacity. If you find yourself not needing them for the time being, they can easily be stored outside of the fridge as well. Just make sure not to have them scattered around without any rhyme or reason, as this is highly inefficient if you want to get the most out of the space that’s available to you.

  1. Check your food regularly

Letting your food sit idly is the shortest route to it expiring without you knowing. Most cans and packaging have an expiration date printed on either top or bottom, which should make the task much easier. As soon as you identify something that’s about to expire soon, do not hesitate to eat it as soon as possible, lest you risk having to throw it away. While checking your food every single day is probably going overboard, you should certainly do so at least once a week if not every couple of days.

The 4 tips outlined above should drastically improve the efficiency at which you’re using your fridge and maximize its space. Although applying them will surely take a bit of work on your part, the results you’re going to get are well worth the effort you put into maintaining it.
