Udupi is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka. It lends its name to the popular Udupi cuisine. Every nick and corner of Mumbai has a food joints which serve Udupi dishes. They spread out from street joints to casual dining restaurants. The trend of this cuisine started many years back in Mumbai. To shed some light on those who have been serving since decades, we bring to you 8 of the oldest Udupi restaurants in Mumbai.

A traditional Udupi restaurant that has been running since 1950 is remembered even today for serving authentic Mangalorean breakfasts. The ambience of this place is average but if you’re looking for great South Indian snacks you might as well ignore the way it looks. Like they say, never judge a book by its cover. They have limited options to serve. The kadi-idli is quite famous here. The chutney and sambar have a distinctive taste that has been maintained since last two decades. It is located opposite Matunga Railway Station, Lakhamsi Napoo Road, Matunga East. The cost is 200 INR for two.

The place is astoundingly 80 years old! A beloved one to southern families who enjoy their meals here, the restaurant is at the top only because of the quality of food it serves here. It opens at 5 in the morning and is popular for its spectacular dosas, spongy idlis and uttapa. The menu is written on a chalkboard which is changed daily in terms of their day to day specials. It is located at Bhandrakar Road, Matunga East. A light meal will cost you around 40-70 INR.

The place has been standing for decades but has not changed in terms of taste or quality of food. It offers a wide range of South Indian dishes. The dish Bissibelli which is flavoured rice cooked in dal and other spices is worth a try. Anand Bhavan is at 461/A, Ram Niwas, Maheshwari Udyan, Ambedkar Road, Matunga East. The meal costs around 200 INR for two people approximately.

It is another addition to the list of oldest Udupi restaurants in Mumbai. Like the others it serves a great variety of South Indian dishes. However, it has made an inclusion to its menu with other dishes like Punjabi and Indian Chinese as well. A meal for two will cost around 250 INR approximately. Special Anand Bhuvan is located at 30 Mint Road, Opposite Bhanushali Building, Fort, Mumbai.

It was established by A. Rama Nayak in the year 1942. It is considered to be a home away from home for South Indians who are in search of home-style cuisine here in Mumbai. Rama Nayak takes extreme care of hygiene and don’t be surprised if you see signs like , “Please buy your tokens in advance”; “Unused coupons can be used next time”; “Try eating in leaf in Indian way, without spoon”; “Plate meal is ideal for the blue collar man”; “Udipi means good food”. All of this makes it a favourite among foodies. It serves lip smacking delicacies spreading out on a banana leaf. It is located at 1st Floor, L.B.S. Market Building, Matunga (C.Rly).

This popular Udupi food joint is said to be Mukesh Ambani’s favorite. There is also a dish on the menu named after Rahul Dravid! It serves traditional Udupi cuisine and the aroma of the food lingers all across the place. It is packed during office hours so you might have to share your table here. It is located at 461, Durlabh Nivas, Bhaudaji Road, Opposite King’s Circle Garden, Matunga East.

The place is divided into two parts- one is for air conditioned sitting while the other gives a rustic street side vibe. The service here is lightening quick while the ambience is rather average. It is advisable to not try the Punjabi dishes served here, but the main Udupi dishes are a must try. It is at Jeewan Niwas, Opposite Railway Station, Mulund West.

Standing strong since 1937 is Mani’s Lunch Home a famous South Indian restaurant serves quality food worth every penny. The perfectly light idlis, mouth watering medu wadas and a vast variety of crisp dosas make Mani a top pick among Udupi restaurants. It was founded by Sri V. S. Mani Iyer which is now run by his eldest son Sri. K.S. Narayanaswamy  and his brothers. It is located at Plot. No. 153/C. Mhaskar Building, Matunga.
