With his second film being premiered on his birthday (16th May) at the Cannes Film Festival, no words could express Vicky’s happiness. Here’s wishing the young talented actor a very Happy Birthday. Talking to Viraj Sawant about his upcoming film RAMAN RAGHAV 2.0, Vicky Kaushal thanks Anurag Kashyap for pushing him to play this character.

Actors who have been in the industry for years haven’t been invited to Cannes film festival and this will be your second time. How does it feel?

It feels like a dream to me. I sometimes don’t believe that so many good things are happening so early in my life and early in my career. I don’t know if I have done anything right or wrong but am glad it’s happening. More than anything else, I am happy that I get an opportunity work with such amazing directors and such good films. Which gives me happiness and I feel more blessed.

Are you expecting a standing ovation like last time?

When your film is selected in the Director’s Fortnight it’s a big deal already. It’s been selected from thousand other entries, that itself is an honour for us. Apart from that the appreciation that we get, standing ovation or not, we feel honoured already. The appreciation or the standing ovation is an added bonus.

Your film will be screened on the same day as your Birthday. How special is your birthday going to be this time?

I think it’s going to be my most special birthday. I am someone who likes to work on birthdays. This is the best gift I have ever got. Having the world premiere of your film is just unbelievable.

From working as an AD on GANGS OF WASSEYPUR to working with him in RAMAN RAGHAV 2.0. How was it working with Nawazuddin?

I am a big admirer of his work since the time I saw him in BLACK FRIDAY. I was in 11th standard when I saw him in the film. I couldn’t understand if he was an actor or was he a local doing this role.

To work with somebody who is so good at his craft, just talking to him about his journey is a great experience and it motivates you to push your boundaries. The chemistry between you and your co-actor is more about give and take. When you are receiving some good energy from your co-actor then you give your 100% back to the film. It’s been a very good learning experience for me.

While working on GANGS OF WASSEYPUR, I used to call him once the shot was ready or give claps for his shots and he is just the same even today. And for a person who has achieved so much in life, he still hasn’t changed.

The character you played in MASAAN was a whole different person and your character in RAMAN RAGHAV 2.0 looks clearly bad-ass. How did you transform yourself for this?

My character’s credit goes to Anurag sir. He really pushed me to get into the character. The character I play in the film is really poles apart from what I am or how I normally think. It was a very challenging experience for me. Anurag sir had immense clarity about Raghav’s character.

Apart from that the only thing that I personally did was; I tried to isolate myself from my normal life. Sometimes you get a character you relate to and sometimes you get a character you don’t relate to. To bring out a character you don’t relate to, you have to change the way you think and behave. Acting after all is bringing out a character that you aren’t and looking at a thing from a different person’s perspective. No matter how you think. I knew that I had to keep my self-detached from my normal life. Sitting with Anurag sir and just talking to him about this character changed my perspective of Raghav.
