Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has been convicted by a Mumbai court in years old cheque bounce case. According to media reports, a non-bailable warrant has been issued against him.
The Andheri Magistrate court had scheduled the verdict in the cheque bounce case for Tuesday (January 21), a day before the filmmaker announced his upcoming film Syndicate. However, Varma remained skipped attending the session.
A non-bailable warrant was then issued him by the court.
As reported by India Today, the filmmaker has been sentenced to three months in jail after being convicted of an offense under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which addresses the dishonour of cheques caused by insufficient funds or exceeding the agreed payment amount.
Varma has also been ordered to pay Rs 3.72 lakh in compensation to the complainant within three months, failing which he will face an additional three months of simple imprisonment.
Here's everything about the 2018 case:
In 2018, Varma was involved in a legal case concerning a bounced cheque. The case stemmed from a financial dispute between Varma and a company named Shree. According to media reports, the company filed a case against the filmmaker's firm after Varma’s cheque was dishonoured due to insufficient funds.
Despite multiple hearings, the case lingered in the legal system, and Varma’s non-compliance with the court’s directions and his failure to appear for hearings led to further complications.

Meanwhile, last week, the Rangeela director was in Mumbai to attend the special screening of his film Satya which re-released in theatres.
On the work front, on January 22, he took to his official X account to announce his new movie which has been titled Syndicate. He mentioned in a long note that the film is about a 'terrifying organisation which threatens the very existence of India'.
"SYNDICATE will be a very SCARY FILM not due to any super natural elements , but because it will SCARILY expose, what HORRORS HUMAN BEINGS CAN DO," he wrote.
