Mumbai: Veteran Indian actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, renowned for his patriotic films and the moniker ‘Bharat Kumar,’ passed away at the age of 87 at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital on Friday.

Medical reports revealed that he succumbed to cardiogenic shock caused by acute myocardial infarction, a severe heart attack. Additionally, he had been battling decompensated liver cirrhosis in recent months, which further deteriorated his health, reported news agency ANI.

Kumar was admitted to the hospital on February 21, 2025, after his condition worsened. Despite medical efforts, his health continued to decline, leading to his passing at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri.

Manoj Kumar's Directorials

He gained widespread recognition with films such as Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970) and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), many of which he also directed. His performance in Upkar solidified his patriotic image, leading to his famous nickname.

Beyond his patriotic films, he starred in several other acclaimed movies, including Hariyali Aur Raasta, Woh Kaun Thi, Himalaya Ki God Mein, Do Badan, Patthar Ke Sanam, Neel Kamal and Kranti.

Honoured With Padma Shri In 1992

For his contributions to Indian cinema, he was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1992 and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015. His legacy remains deeply ingrained in Indian film history, particularly for his unwavering depiction of patriotism on screen.

PM Modi Mourns Demise

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences after Manoj Kumar's demise. In a message shared on his official X handle, the Prime Minister described Kumar as an iconic figure in Indian cinema whose deep-rooted patriotic spirit left an indelible mark on audiences.

PM Modi highlighted how Manoj Kumar’s films instilled a strong sense of national pride and would continue to inspire future generations. He extended his heartfelt sympathies to the actor’s family and admirers, calling for peace to his departed soul.

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit mourned the loss, describing Manoj Kumar as an inspiration and a stalwart of the Indian film industry. He expressed about the immense void left by Kumar’s passing, recalling his vibrant personality and the impact he had on Indian cinema. According to Pandit, Kumar’s contributions as an actor and filmmaker were unparalleled and his absence would be deeply felt across the industry.
