Jaat Row: FIR Against Sunny Deol & Randeep Hooda In Punjab For Hurting Religious Sentiments In Controversial Church Scene

An FIR has been lodged with the Jalandhar police against actors Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, director Gopichand Malineni, and the producers of Jaat under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The complaint alleges the film disrespected Jesus Christ. Earlier, a scene had offended the Christian community, prompting outrage and demands for a ban on the film.

Jaat, starring Sunny Deol and Randeep Hooda, sparked controversy after a scene in the film offended the Christian community — they even demanded a ban on the film following its release on April 10. The latest update is that an FIR has been lodged with the Jalandhar police against the actors, director Gopichand Malineni, and the film's producers under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The Christian community earlier objected to the scene in which Randeep's character was seen standing inside a church, right beneath the crucifix, as people prayed. The scene allegedly depicts "acts of intimidation and hooliganism," and this did not go well with the members of the community. The complainant alleged that disrespect was shown towards Jesus Christ.

"The director, writer and producer deliberately released this film during the holy month of Good Friday and Easter so that the Christians get angry and riots break out in the entire country and unrest is spread," the complainant added.

Earlier this week, representatives from the  Christian community submitted a memorandum to the Joint Commissioner demanding a ban on the screening of Jaat in theatres. They also gave an 48-hour ultimatum with a warning of protests if no action is taken.

The makers of Jaat are yet to issue an official statement on the fiasco.

The film also stars Regena Cassandrra, Saiyami Kher, Jagapathi Babu, Ramya Krishnan, Vineet Kumar Singh, Prashant Bajaj, Zarina Wahab, P Ravi Shankar and Babloo Prithiveeraj. The movie was produced by Mythri Movie Makers and People Media Factory and was released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages.

Jaat released in theatres on April 10, 2025, and it marks Sunny's return to the big screens after 1.5 years, his last film being the blockbuster Gadar 2.

Despite the lukewarm box office performance of Jaat, the actor announced Jaat 2 on Thursday, just a week after the release of the first part.
