The plot of the film centres around John Garrity (Gerard Butler), a structural engineer living in Atlanta. John shares his life with his wife and their beloved son, Nathan. Everything seems perfect until they learn that a comet named Clarke, originating from outside the solar system, is on a collision course with Atlanta. In a desperate attempt to escape, the family travels to an airfield to be transported to bunkers near the North Pole. As they navigate this crisis, they encounter both the best and worst aspects of humanity amidst the rising panic and lawlessness around them. The film unfolds to reveal whether John will be able to save his family.
