Tamil superstar Vijay recently organised a grand Iftar gathering at the YMCA grounds in Royapettah, Chennai, which was met with appreciation from his fans. However, the event has now become the center of controversy, as a formal complaint has been filed against the actor by the Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath.
According to media reports, Syed Kous, the treasurer of Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath, has alleged that the gathering disrespected the sentiments of the Muslim community. He claimed that the event was poorly organised and failed to uphold the true spirit of Iftar.
Furthermore, a report in News18 mentioned that Syed Kous stated that individuals who had no connection to fasting or the religious significance of Iftar were present at the gathering, making the event an insult to the community. He also criticised the security measures at the event, alleging that Vijay’s foreign guards treated attendees disrespectfully and like 'cows'.
"Muslims were insulted at the Iftar program organised by Vijay. We believe the participation of drunkards and rowdies who had nothing to do with fasting or Iftar has insulted Muslims," he reportedly said.
The treasurer has urged authorities to take legal action against the actor politician, emphasising that the complaint was not filed for publicity but to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The actor, who is gearing up for his political debut, has not yet issued an official statement regarding the matter.
About Vijay's Iftar party in Chennai
On March 8, the South superstar hosted an iftar party during the holy month of Ramzan. He was seen wearing a skull cap and participating in the evening prayers as those who observed roza broke their fast.
Photos and videos of Vijay went viral on the internet. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder and chief was seen wearing an all-white outfit, complete with a skull cap, as he participated in the iftari rituals with his Muslim brethren.
If reports are to be believed, Vijay also observed a full day of fasting and offered prayers according to Islamic customs, before participating in the iftar rituals and hosting a feast for thousands of locals.
The event was organised by his party at the YMCA grounds in Royapettah, Chennai. Imams from 15 local mosques were invited to participate and preparations were made to accommodate nearly 3,000 attendees.
Vijay's political debut
Meanwhile, Vijay is currently gearing up for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections, and reportedly, he has decided to contest the elections independently, without forming any kind of alliance with the AIADMK.
On the film front, Vijay is set to release his upcoming film, Jana Nayagan, soon, and it will also be his last film.
