At a Holi Party, she met Ashok Thakeria introduced by producer-director Umesh Mehra and his wife Ritu at their Khandala farmhouse. Poonam had just lost her father and was depressed when she met Ashok. There were reports that Ashok used to send her flowers daily. Seeing so much love towards her, she said `yes’ to marry him. They tied the knot in 1988.
The couple had two children. Poonam became a stay-at-home mom to raise the kids – the first their son Anmol and then daughter Paloma. But destiny did not want to carry this on, and, the couple got separated, because, Poonam got uninterested by a busy husband, and, it is also reported that Ashok was getting involved with other women.
In October 1997, Poonam left Ashok, and, moved on to live with her sister Rsihma Pai, who is doctor in Mumbai. Till today, she has stayed single with her daughter and son. It was rumoured that Poonam son Anmol would be making a debut in Bollywood. Poona said on this, “In my opinion, boys should not start with films before they are at least 24 years of age, because emoting on screen needs a certain amount of maturity, and a lot rides on an actor’s shoulders. Fortunately, my son has been receiving quite a lot of interesting offers, but he’s very particular and fussy about the kind of film he wants to debut in. But it will happen soon now.”
And daughter Paloma look like a Poonam. She has always been in the news. Being athletic she loves playing football, and, was part of her school’s fooball team.
