Saira Rahman, former wife of music composer AR Rahman, was recently hospitalised due to a medical emergency and subsequently underwent surgery. The news was confirmed through a statement issued by her lawyer, Vandana Shah on Thursday (February 20).
In the statement, Saira requested privacy during this period and expressed gratitude for the support she received from her well-wishers, including AR Rahman, sound designer Resul Pookutty, his wife Shadia, and Vandana Shah. She also requested prayers for her speedy recovery.
"A few days ago, Mrs. Saira Rahman was hospitalised due to a medical emergency and underwent surgery. During this challenging time, her sole focus is on recovering quickly. She deeply appreciates the concern and support from those around her and is truly grateful for their kindness and encouragement," the statement read.
"She also seeks privacy during this period and expresses gratitude for the understanding from her supporters and well-wishers," it added.
The Oscar-winning music composer and Saira shocked everyone by announcing their separation after 29 years of marriage in November 2024. Ever since he announced the news, several rumours surfaced on social media platforms and the Rahman family members have been quashing all of them. The singer had also asked for privacy.
"We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter," Rahman's separation announcement post read.
Rahman had warned 'slanderers' against sharing defamatory posts on social media about his divorce and stated that he won't hesitate from taking legal action.
Rahman and Saira got married in 1995 and share three children—Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen.
