These days, awards ceremonies are not just about honouring the truly deserving, it’s all about dazzling showmanship, OTT drama, heart-wrenching emotions, masala moments and so much more. It’s at the awards ceremonies that actors dramatically take to the spotlight to announce their new bonding or perhaps their tumultuous breakup. And in the bargain, you have dollops of glamour ‘n’ glitz peppered generously with mirch masala and TRP escalating moments… Voila, you have a winner on hand!
…Gone are the days when award ceremonies were a serious, serene bow-tie affair, these days, you have these heart beating, TRP clambering mini episodes that are complete paisa vasool…and that’s because you have the top stars of Tinsel Town playing up to the galleries not only on stage but also behind the scenes as well as on social media.
In fact, if you go by the two recent awards ceremonies that were held early this year — Filmfare Awards 2019 and Zee Cine Awards 2019, the OTT quotient is indeed soaring high. In fact, nobody really cares who won or lost. It’s more about which actress bitched the other one out, which actor stole the show, who wore what and what were the most memorable emotional moments of the show. The awards per se are completely overshadowed. Here’s proof…
True to type, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh were the crowd faves. People just couldn’t get enough of DeepVeer’s PDA at the awards… be it the Filmfare or Zee Cine Awards. In fact the TRPs soared super high whenever they stole a moment to reiterate their love for each in terms of a melting kiss or a hug. No wonder, there was a camera zooming permanently on them.
In fact, even as we speak, the video byte of Deepika kissing Ranveer lingeringly on the mouth before he received the Filmfare Award has gone viral. Ranveer received the Best Actor award for Padmaavat and his super hot wife Deepika was on stage to give it to him. Ranveer went down on his knees and Deepika tenderly gave him a passionate long smooch much to the delight of the crowds. And the audience was uncontrollable when Ranveer said, “This Black Lady (award) is very special to me, but this lady (Deepika) is the most special lady to have ever happened to me, I love you, are you proud of me?” Awww! No wonder, the rather gimmicky pheras taken by the couple on stage ensured that the awards ceremony got a ‘don’t dare miss it’ status.
Incidentally, it isn’t just TV’s blaring ‘breaking news’ that says it all, awards ceremonies too announce new lovers and their passionate bonding. Lovebirds Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor made their love public at last as they swayed romantically to Ishqwala Love… on stage. But when Alia coquettishly kissed Ranbir Kapoor when he went to receive his award, the delighted audience went crazy screaming their approval. Of course, the TRPs literally caught on fire when the cameras zoomed provocatively on Ranbir’s ex-flames Deepika who wore a smile a mile long and Katrina who looked as if she had plastered on a smile for the sake of the cameras. Full paisa vasool.
Another love story unravelled rather publicly at the awards ceremony when Farhan Akhtar almost got the audience gagging when he cracked a wisecrack on stage. He was awarded the Best Dressed Actor and the hostess announced that was because he had “made love to his suit”. Farhan then quipped that he should apologise to Shibani (Dandekar) for making love to his suit. And of course, the fat was in the fire. Though Farhan and Shibani had made public appearances together many times, they had never announced their love on a public platform. And of course doing this rather cleverly at the awards got their ‘We-are-now-a-couple’ status in the spotlight.
Of course, it wasn’t just public love. When Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone walked onto the red carpet rather comfortably without their men Ranbir and Ranveer, the shutterbugs went berserk as the ladies hugged and kissed each other. The ‘Ex’ factor at this point took on a new level.
Of course, it did have a bit of red-blooded claw-scratching bitchin’ too. Supposedly, Vicky Kaushal, who was the anchor at one of the awards, insisted on calling Deepika ‘Bhabhi’ — she was fine the first few times, but when Vicky insisted on dragging it to a rankling level, an irate Deepika supposedly voiced to her pals about how Vicky was over-stepping the mark. Hmm…
Deepika of course, was the belle of the awards this year. Not only did she look amazingly sexy in a flaming cleavage revealing gown at the Zee Cine Awards 2019 and a hot black number at the Filmfare Awards, she also made sure that she was in the spotlight when she announced rather grandly that she wanted to “apologise for not winning the Best Actress award for Padmaavat” — her honeyed tone made it so very clear that she should have won hands down. Ah well, the awards are indeed a time when our divas take centre stage.
Of course, it being the time for social media antics, behind the scenes digital bytes were also full on as the awards went on full blast into the night. Varun Dhawan posted a video of Ranveer Singh, Deepika and Vicky Kaushal dancing to his song First Class… from Kalank. And of course, it not only promoted the song, the film but also the awards. Very clever!
Sara Ali Khan too looked rather ecstatic as she received her Filmfare award but post that, her swinging party with Kartik Aryaan was the talk of the town. What was also in the news was how a very miffed alleged ex-flame Sushant Singh Rajput unfollowed Sara almost immediately. So hail the awards for giving us enough goss for the month!
