A partnership between India’s leading production house, AKFPL; patrons of art and cinema, Tumbhi and India’s largest multiplex chain, PVR Cinemas and produced by director Anurag Kashyap and producer Guneet Monga, this unique format of five unrelated award winning short films being released together as an anthology of sorts.
All the five films are uniquely conceived and shaped quite stylishly. But their uniqueness is also their main failing. None of the stories can be related to and neither can their western inspirations be overlooked.
Sujata by Shlok Sharma, is a tale of a young girl, struggling to come out of the clutches of her tormenting cousin brother. Siddhartha Gupta’s Epilogue has a young couple struggling within the strains of their sudden incompatibility.
Anirban Roy’s Audacity is a sort of dark comedy about parental authority, teenage rebellion. Rohit Pandey’s Mehfhuz has intensely engaging Nawazuddin Siddiqui searing us with his inner fire. He is the caretaker of the dead who suddenly finds new meaning in life only to lose it.
Neeraj Ghaywan’s Shor is a city fable about a young migrant couple who get a grip on themselves just when they are about to lose it all.
All the five mini-features are distinctive and engaging. Ghaywan’s and Anirban Roy’s two films are the most relatable in terms of treatment. The rest are a little too wannabe to make for engrossing cinema!
