Mumbai: As part of an ongoing initiative to enhance functional English language proficiency in government schools, the Pehlay Akshar Foundation has inaugurated an 'English Room' at a Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) School. This is the first such room in Thane and one of twelve in Maharashtra, with ten in Mumbai and one each in Pune and Thane.
The learning space is equipped with a smart television and digital resources, using a pedagogical framework that incorporates methodologies and teaching aids to foster critical thinking and creativity among students, the foundation stated.
The curriculum includes interactive activities such as educational games, songs, flashcards, and theme-based discussions to make learning engaging and effective.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by TMC education officer, Kamlakant Mhetre, and block officer, Rajendra Pardeshi. Addressing the gathering, Mhetre underscored the significance of strengthening English language skills in government schools alongside regional languages.

He stated, “In contemporary society, there is considerable pressure on parents to enrol their children in English-medium schools, whether due to societal expectations or peer influence. It is, therefore, imperative to bolster English language instruction within government schools to ensure that every child has access to a high standard of education.”
Radha Goenka, Founder of the Pehlay Akshar Foundation, articulated the broader vision of the initiative, stating, “Every child deserves the opportunity to dream. Through the English Room, we are cultivating an educational environment that nurtures students’ aspirations and voices in a language that expands their horizons, breaking barriers to education and progress.”
According to the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2023, 46 per cent of adolescents enrolled in Standard X or below in India struggle with reading English sentences. Furthermore, a quarter of those who are able to read English sentences lack comprehension skills. In response to these challenges, the English Room initiative seeks to establish a supportive and motivating environment for both students and teachers.
