Chennai: In order to install cameras and sensors in school buses, the Tamil Nadu government has requested that the State Motor Vehicles Department change the 2012 Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles (Regulation and Control of School Buses) Special Rules.

In a recent notification, the state home department instructed the motor vehicles department to make sure that school buses have cameras and sensors.

The government has requested in its instruction that cameras be installed in buses as well so that the driver can see the entire backside when going in reverse.

Additionally, sensors in the back should be fixed to provide a warning signal.

34,463 educational institutions buses are operating in the state, according to the state Commissionerate of Transport and Road Safety. All of these buses used by educational institutions will need to have cameras and sensors installed if the Motor Vehicles Department changes the laws.

Notably, the Madras High Court had taken suo motu cognizance of a Selaiyur incident in which a Class II boy lost his life after falling through a hole in the school bus and being ran over by the vehicle. The state administration had been ordered by the court to carry out an operation to guarantee the security of kids.

On March 28, 2022, a second terrible occurrence occurred when an eight-year-old kid was killed after he was struck by a school bus while on the school's grounds. When the driver was reversing the car, an accident occurred.

On March 28, around 8.30 am, the school bus dropped off Theeksheth, a pupil in the second standard, within the campus. The boy headed back to the car after realising he had forgotten his school backpack as he was making his way to the classroom. Poongavanam, the driver, could not see the youngster reversing the car and fatally struck him. The bus lacked an assistance, a sensor, or a camera that could have informed the driver of the passenger's existence.
