New Delhi: The viral notice claiming that the National Exit Test (NExT) will be implemented for MBBS students beginning with the 2022 batch has been deemed fake by the National Medical Commission (NMC) official, as per the Medical Dialogues report.
The clarification came after the notice, dated April 1, 2026, began circulating widely on social media platforms. The document claimed that, according to a revised roadmap, NExT would apply to all MBBS students admitted from the 2022 batch and would be conducted in a phased manner.
The notice read as: "As per the revised roadmap and in continuation of previous communications, it has been decided that the NExT examination shall be applicable to all MBBS students admitted from the 2022 batch onwards."
The National Medical Commission (NMC) official further stated that the notice is fake. He further clarified that, “NMC is going to issue a public notice.”
For several years, there has been controversy surrounding the NExT exam. The NMC announced in 2023 that the exam would be introduced for the 2019 MBBS batch. However, following strong protests by students who claimed that the move violated provisions of the NMC Act of 2019, the Ministry intervened and put the decision on hold. The commission subsequently postponed the exam indefinitely and cancelled the scheduled mock test.
In the face of ongoing uncertainty, the NMC initiated discussions with stakeholders to gather feedback on key aspects of the exam. These included whether NExT should replace the final MBBS examination or be held separately, as well as its format, timing, syllabus, and mode of delivery.
NMC Chairperson Abhijat Sheth previously stated that the proposed exam may not be implemented for a few years because the commission is still working to finalise and refine its structure.
As of now, there is no official confirmation regarding its implementation timeline, and the exam remains under consideration.
