National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a new regulation mandating the completion of the Basic Course in Medical Education Technology (BCMET) by medical faculty members for promotion to posts of Associate Professor and Professor. The rule applies to faculty members in accredited medical colleges who teach in the Broad Specialties (MD/MS) and Super Specialties (DM/MCh).

As per the Teachers Eligibility Qualification in Medical Institutions Regulations, 2022, BCMET course has to be undertaken with NMC-approved institutions in order to become eligible for promotion.

Special Provision for Government Medical Colleges

The Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) has implemented a temporary measure to facilitate last-minute appointments in government medical colleges. An attestation from the Principal Secretary of Medical Education of the relevant state or UT is required if a faculty member has not completed BCMET on the day of appointment. It must be confirmed that the faculty member will complete the BCMET course within the next academic session.

"In respect of appointment of faculty in Government Medical Colleges, where posts have been sanctioned and appointments thereto made at the last moment, the Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) has decided that in such cases, an affidavit must be obtained from the Principal Secretary, Medical Education, Government of the respective State/UT, confirming that the appointed faculty will complete the BCMET training within the next academic year," reads the notification.
