NEET UG 2025: The Supreme Court has decided to hear a plea next week for re-examination of the NEET UG 2025 for students who allegedly have been affected by power cuts at exam centers in Madhya Pradesh. The petition, filed by students from Indore and Ujjain, claims they were unfairly disadvantaged during the May 4 test.

Background of the Dispute

Initially, a single-judge bench of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh instructed the National Testing Agency (NTA) to hold a re-test for the candidates involved. The judge ruled that the students were affected by circumstances outside their control and instructed that NEET counselling should be made contingent on the result of the re-exam.

But this order was reversed by a division bench, which took its cue from an expert committee report. The report admitted the power outages but concluded that natural light was adequate for the candidates to resume the exam. It also mentioned that only 70 among over 27,000 candidates from the two cities had formally complained.

What Happened in the Supreme Court

According to media reports, on Tuesday, the issue was discussed before a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi. The counsel for the petitioners requested an early hearing, referring to the counselling under NEET slated to commence on July 21. But the Court refused to bring the hearing date forward, observing that there would be more rounds of counselling, so students are not put at a disadvantage.

The Court has now issued a notice to the NTA, seeking an explanation on the alleged absence of proper arrangements during the exam.
