Mumbai: The Indian Institute of Management Mumbai (IIM Mumbai), in partnership with the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India, has launched a week-long Capacity Building Programme to train 35 senior CAG officials in auditing logistics, inventory, and supply chain systems in the oil and gas sector.
The initiative also marks a significant step towards integrating emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and prescriptive analytics into public auditing practices.
“In collaboration with CAG officials, we have organised five-day training programmes for their capacity building in the domain of AI, generative AI, and prescriptive analytics, especially within the oil and gas sector,” Prof. Manoj Tiwari, Director, IIM Mumbai, told The Free Press Journal.
“Such programmes aim to strengthen the adoption of new technologies and support data-driven decision making among auditors and senior officials of CAG,” he added.
The programme, inaugurated at IIM Mumbai on Wednesday, is designed to address the complexities of supply chains in one of India’s most critical sectors. Prof. Tiwari opened the academic sessions with a detailed overview of the oil and gas value chain, highlighting audit-critical areas in logistics performance and operational risk.
Deepak Shetty, I.R.S. (Retd.), Former Director General of Shipping, delivered a keynote address offering global insights into maritime trade regulations and the audit implications of international shipping. The day's sessions concluded with a presentation by supply chain expert Ruma Kishor, who spoke on risk management and vulnerabilities in oil and gas logistics systems.
Conceived under the leadership of K. Sanjay Murthy, Comptroller and Auditor General of India, the programme reflects a growing need to align audit practices with emerging challenges in international trade, logistics efficiency, and technology adoption.
The academic framework was shaped by Prof. Vivekanand B. Khanapuri, Dean of Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy (SRIC), while Vijay Kothari, Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IA\&AS), Principal Director of Audit (Shipping), was acknowledged for his pivotal role in developing the sector-specific training content.
“We are working with 35 CAG officials to equip them with the skills to apply AI and ML tools to address auditing challenges more effectively,” added Prof. Tiwari. “The goal is to prepare them to navigate complex logistics and supply chains using smarter, technology-driven approaches.”
