CBSE: CBSE officials said Class 12 students studying in 'dummy schools' may be banned from appearing for the board exams. According to news agency PTI, the board stated that it is the joint responsibility of parents and students to attend school regularly and non-compliance can have serious consequences.
The issue became more notable when a student of SGN Public School in Nangloi, Delhi secured the top position in the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Mains. Then, further investigations followed and discovered that last year the school had been disaffiliated by the CBSE board due to several violations for admitting non-attending students. Substantial deviation from CBSE norms was revealed during surprise inspections leading to stringent action against the institution.
According to the India Today report, the Delhi High Court has also dealt with the menace of fake/ dummy schools and described the running of such dummy schools as a fraud. A bench headed by Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela directed the CBSE and the Delhi government on January 27, 2025, to take prompt action to identify and regulate such centres, ensuring compliance with the attendance requirement. It also objected to the attendance requirement for board examinations, while students are free to attend coaching centres while still enrolled in these institutions.
Highlighting the importance of traditional schooling, CBSE has already expelled more than 300 dummy schools across the country. The board argues that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 calls for holistic learning, which gets lost if students move away from traditional schooling to coaching centres.
CBSE's actions against dummy schools demonstrate its dedication to ensuring educational integrity and guaranteeing that students receive a holistic education through regular attendance. The actions taken by the board are a warning to the institutions that indulge in such malpractices and also emphasize the need for parents and students to play an active role in ensuring educational integrity.
